When I was in my twenties, I knew everything. When I turned fifty I realized I didn’t know much of anything. Now that I’m turning seventy I’m starting to wake up. There are options if life, we don’t need to act like sheep and follow the crowd. We need to take responsibility for our own life and for our physical and mental health. We need to educate ourselves, our family, and our friends as to the many choices we have when it comes to our physical and mental health.

Last week, if I was having my annual physical exam and the Doctor told me that I had the possibility of having prostate cancer, I would have immediately allowed him to take a biopsy of my prostate. If that biopsy came back positive I would have agreed to have my prostate surgically removed if that was the recommendation of my Doctor.

This week my attitude to that same physical exam and results would be 100% in the opposite direction. What has changed my mind – I attended a three day conference at the newly opened Cuchara Inn and Wellness Center right here in downtown Cuchara, Colorado.

Meet Peter Starr

Peter Starr, the Chairman of the Healing Arts Education Foundation, and a featured speaker at the Cuchara conference was a very interesting, informative, and convincing individual.

Peter’s long career in filmmaking has brought him major international awards. Since his diagnosis of prostate cancer in June of 2004, he has concentrated on learning about restoring his own health while reversing his disease.

His journey to seek an alternative method, utilizing diet and lifestyle changes to treat his cancer, took him to eight countries on three continents where he interviewed 56 doctors, health practitioners and researchers.

This intense schooling and its practical application lead to the production of the documentary Surviving Prostate Cancer Without Surgery, Drugs or Radiation. Peter Starr continues his research into cures using natural medicine, believing that the “natural way” should always be the “primary way.”

Peter's Face Book

I came away from his session and from the three day conference with a new awareness of how we must take responsibility for our own health.

My New Knowledge of Cancer

Most Cancers; including Prostate, Breast, and others, can be brought under control by other than the radical means of Surgery, Chemotherapy, and Radiation if preventive action is taken, or if detected early on.

The best way to avoid prostate cancer is preventative. A healthy diet of fresh natural foods, a stress free life style, and exercise are the keys.

The most usual and common check for prostate problems is a PSA test during an annual physical. 30 million men undergo a PSA test annually, of these 100,000 undergo a biopsy. But this test is not necessarily the best test and can be very questionable.

When diagnosed with prostate cancer 70% of men do whatever the Doctor says, they do not do research and check their options. First thing is a biopsy, and then surgical removal of the prostate. It is reported that a biopsy of the prostate can actually lead to a spreading of the cancer. The victims of surgical removal of the prostate and their spouses have no idea that this can be the end of their sex lives, and the beginning of a miserable life of erectile dysfunction and incontinence.

The Cancers in our Physical Life

Wikipedia defines cancer:

Cancer, also known as a malignant tumor or malignant neoplasm, is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body.

Wikipedia goes on to say:

Many cancers can be prevented by not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, being vaccinated against certain infectious diseases, not eating too much processed and red meat, and avoiding too much exposure to sunlight.

Another great source of information is the American Cancer Society

My Own Experience

Several years ago my Mother who was 85 years old, and who was quite active socially in several crowds, told me that she had noticed that all of her friends that were having cancer problems had underlying mental problems that had help lead to their sickness. Her friends that had good mental attitudes were all healthy. I could see for myself this was true as most of my parent’s friends were now in their 80’s and 90’s.

It is amazing that our mental (spiritual) attitudes have such a major effect on our physical bodies and their resistance to disease. Since starting Meditation years ago I find myself much calmer and relaxed. I change what I can and let the rest pass me by.

When I exercise regularly my body feels much better, my attitude is much better, and my sleep is very sound and refreshing. When I switched to an all organic diet several years ago I found myself feeling much younger and healthier.

Meditation

Meditation helps us overcome all the negatives that attempt to enter our minds constantly. It can lead to inner peace, happiness, and to our mental and physical wellness. Absolutely, if your mind is calm, peaceful, and full of happiness you will find that not only will your body stay healthy and resist disease; but your mind will be sharp and you will be able to function at 100%. A mind functioning at 100% is the absolute ideal. With a calm, peaceful, and happy mind you will radiate that peacefulness and you will find that other happy people will be glad to meet you and be your friend. At the same time your loved ones will see that peace in you and they will become more peaceful and loving – which is a goal all of us could strive for.

Good luck with your life, and I hope these few ideas will help to inspire you. Sure I am an idealist, and some sickness, accidents, and other bad things happen but those are things we have to work around anyway. Why not be as calm, peaceful, and full of happiness as we can.
